Scientists have discovered a gene in fruit flies which will allow them to study the effects aging has on DNA. In new work published in the journal Aging Cell, the researchers demonstrate the value of this model in helping to understand the aging process. The study demonstrates that fruit flies can be used to study critical aspects of human aging at cellular, genetic and biochemical levels. (more...)

At a recent conference on artificial intelligence, a group of researchers from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute demonstrated an engineered character, "Eddie", a 4-year-old child in Second Life who can reason about his own beliefs to draw conclusions in a manner that matches human children his age. Scientists have built the first synthetic genome by stringing together the building blocks of DNA. The researchers used yeast to stitch together four long strands of DNA into the genome of a bacterium called Mycoplasma genitalium. (more...)

Genesis I launched on a Dnepr booster from Yasny Launch Base in Siberia. The launch was conducted by Bigelow Aerospace and ISC Kosmotras. Despite ground-side difficulties during launch, the spacecraft performed as expected upon reaching orbit, inflating, deploying solar arrays and starting internal systems. (more...)
