Robotics is the science and technology of robots, incorporating electrical, mechanical and software systems. Robots are usually designed to perform a specific set of operations, often with a degree of automony. In recent years, work in the field has yielded significant advances, suggesting that the role and presence of robots in the coming decades will be very different from what they are today. Devices like Roomba and toys like Aibo are likely to only be the beginning, with household robots and even pets becoming quite pervasive in the future. Beyond this, advances in the field may well lead to integration with the human body, resulting in a human-machine synthesis. (See cyber organism/cyborg.)
