Transportation advances have dramatically altered the structure and cohesiveness of the nuclear family. Media and the internet have influenced business, leisure and government. Birth control alone has changed everything from gender rights to concepts of morality.
As technological advances accelerate, our culture and institutions will have not choice but to change with them. What will be the legal rights of an artificial general intelligence? Is murder of a virtual reality avatar a crime? What if that digital avatar is the only representation of an uploaded human mind? What are the financial obligations of a pension plan to a person with increased longevity due to medical advances? Of five years? What about fifty years?
